NO CRITICISM ALLOWED, EVEN FROM OPPOSITION?

ANOTHER mind-boggling pro-government “expose” hit the smartphone screens yesterday with the news portal apparently uncovering some PKR internal communications.

For the record, PKR is currently an opposition party. Opposition parties generally are expected to air critical and opposing views of the government’s policies, actions and non-actions.

It was reported that the party’s newly revived media arm Suara Keadilan had requested short videos criticising the government and their handling of the Covid 19 pandemic as well as the ensuing economic crisis.

The chain message was apparently sighted by a team of reporters and reported as the leaders who had contributed the requested short videos would be aptly rewarded, although the report itself did not carry further explanation or evidence linking this accusation.

The FMT story in Bahasa Malaysia is in this link:

This also justifies growing public concern over the alarming rise in efforts to curb not just opposition parties, but public views opposed to the government.

PKR communications chief Shamsul Iskandar Mohd Akin responded with similar concerns in his press statement today.

“When PN ministers say anything insensible like drinking warm water will help kill the virus, or the ministry’s recommendation for wives to make Doraemon’s voices, or do road sanitation by wasting personal protective equipment, or inviting students to play TikTok, or the latest action UMNO attacks Dr. Musa Nordin – surely the people are not going to remain silent. We believe that people have the wisdom to criticize actions that negatively impact their lives,” Shamsul said, in reference to the freeflow of fumbles made by Cabinet ministers in recent weeks.

This steady flow of antics with high trolling value has also become the but of jokes not just among netizens locally, but has also put the ministers involved on global news.

“PN should recognise that the people can no longer be fooled by the mantra of “the government can do no wrong”. Don’t underestimate the wisdom of the people. It’s a worn-out political practice. This is the difference between a government that is elected through the mandate of the people and the government of the traitors of the people,” said Shamsul.

“Governments with the mandate of the people will accept the people as partners in the struggle, while the government of the traitors without the mandate will see the people as a threat.”

Higher Education Minister Noraini Ahmad became the latest Cabinet member to be ridiculed by the public for launching a TikTok contest.

Following is Shamsul Iskandar’s press statement:

The People’s Justice Party (KEADILAN) has denied that there is an attempt to get Malaysians to go public to produce a short video to criticize the Perikatan Nasional Government as recently released. The additional allegations of providing funds for the production of short videos from the people is false, as PKR does NOT have such financial capabilities.

The people have the awareness and the ability to think rationally and critically. When looking at PN’s weaknesses in dealing with the crisis that threatens the country and the lives of the people, it is certain that they will voice criticism.

When PN ministers say anything insensible like drinking warm water will help kill the virus, or the ministry’s recommendation for wives to make Doraemon’s voices, or do road sanitation by wasting personal protective equipment, or inviting students to play TikTok, or the latest action UMNO attacks Dr. Musa Nordin – surely the people are not going to remain silent. We believe that people have the wisdom to criticize actions that negatively impact their lives.

Therefore, I urge PN to respond positively to the people with open minds. Try to understand those criticisms and make the necessary corrections. Don’t be too arrogant to assume the government knows everything.

The attempt to divert criticism by attacking me and KEADILAN is certainly more unfortunate because at this point we should focus on preventing spread of the epidemic and saving the country, not playing politics.

PN should recognise that the people can no longer be fooled by the mantra of “the government can do no wrong”. Don’t underestimate the wisdom of the people. It’s a worn-out political practice. This is the difference between a government that is elected through the mandate of the people and the government of the traitors of the people.

Governments with the mandate of the people will accept the people as partners in the struggle, while the government of the traitors without the mandate will see the people as a threat.
